Japan has always been to some extent associated with the culture revolving around tea. Nobody can deny that tea cultivation and consumption have become an immanent element of Japanese culture and that tea has certainly had an indisputable impact on the life of Japanese citizens and their ancestors. However, although the Japanese tea phenomenon is widely known about, majority of you would still be surprised, how enormous the scale of this phenomenon is. It may not be obvious to some, for example, within how many areas of life of Japanese civilization one can actually observe this aforementioned tea\u2019s influence. The sense of aesthetics, cultural moral compass, sphere of religion, realm of art, even the very sense of existence \u2013 each of these aspects of both spiritual and physical life has been in some way influenced by something, which within our culture is considered to be merely a tasty beverage. \u201eThe outsider may indeed wonder at this seeming much ado about nothing. What a tempest in a tea-cup! he will say\u201d- writes Kakuzo Okakura (1983-1913). He is the author of, one might say, the compendium of tea culture \u2013 \u201e Book of Tea\u201d, created in 1906 \u2013 and a devotee of a philosophy known as \u2018teaism\u2019. We believe that everyone would agree- he does have a point. The concept of an almost religious cult revolving around, in our understanding, an ordinary drink does actually occur as particularly abstract. However, within this article, supporting ourselves with citations of \u201eBook of Tea\u201d, we are going to try to make this concept a bit more familiar. <\/p>\n\n

\"Teaism\"<\/figure>\n\n

One of the major lessons, which can be drawn from the everyday experience of tea consumption, is, according to Okakura, the attempt and eventually the ability to find beauty and harmony within the simplicity of everyday life. \u201eThose who cannot feel the littleness of great things in themselves are apt to overlook the greatness of little things in others\u201d- one can read within the \u201eBook\u201d. In order to find happiness and the sense of existence, one should not seek them within the things that are grand and pompous. Those may never take place in one\u2019s life. Instead, each one of us ought to focus on finding peace within these small, seemingly meaningless elements of our reality- one of them being tea ceremony. Beauty can be found within the humming of the clay teapot, the soothing scent of delicate dried tealeaves, peaceful process of brewing, the moment of enjoyment of the beverage with the loved one\u2026 The devotees of teaism call for seeking peace within those little moments, in order to fill one\u2019s life with a myriad of everyday miracles. Such practice of savouring tea ceremony constitutes priceless mindfulness training. Such acquired mindfulness should be then transported from the tea ceremony into other areas of life. It is significant, for contemplation gained through mindfulness leads to the sense of unity with the surroundings, which is essential to experience the feeling of purpose. Another wisdom, with which one can equip oneself through practicing teaism, is a higher level of tolerance towards another human being. For tea ceremony \u2013 such a significant ritual for each member of the Japanese culture- is a multigenerational tradition, which does not recognize the division into classes. The scent of tea \u201e[\u2026] has permeated the elegance of noble boudoirs, and entered the abode of the humble. Our peasants have learned to arrange flowers, our meanest labourer to offer his salutation to the rocks and waters.\u201d The tea has always been therefore a social bonding agent, an element shared by each and every one of the citizens- regardless of one\u2019s status quo or financial standing. It has therefore also always been an element generating the sense of solidarity and fellowship. \u201eIt represents the true spirit of Eastern democracy by making all its votaries aristocrats in taste.\u201d To this day it can be hence considered to be the low tide of prejudice and classism, as the evidence for the fact that every human being deserves some everyday bits of beauty and luxury.For some, the tea will always be \u2018just tea\u2019. However, the tea itself and the rituals surrounding it can also constitute a treasure trove filled with valuable lessons. In the end, we are the ones who decide, how much value we give to the elements of the world around us. <\/p>\n\n
