The effect of green tea on your skin

Green tea, or extract made from it, can be found in the ingredients of many face and body cosmetics. Purifying green tea face masks, anti-ageing exfoliants and relaxing shower gels are just a few examples. If applying tea to the skin can improve its condition, what happens when you take it internally instead? How does green tea affect your skin and overall health? We're here to answer that in the article below.

The effect of green tea on your skin

Green tea leaves are a rich source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C, E, K and the B vitamins, as well as iron, calcium, manganese, potassium and many other nutrients. This mix makes it a real boost of essential vitamins for skin of any age. Its high concentration of vitamin C can also help even out skin tone, brighten the complexion, reduce discolouration and under-eye shadows, and improve blood microcirculation. As a result, skin looks remarkably even and radiant.

Polyphenols – allies of longevity

Green tea is notable for its exceptionally high polyphenol content. Polyphenols are powerful antioxidants with a remarkably effective ability to neutralise free radicals. Antioxidation is the process of combating free radicals, otherwise known as oxidants – reactive oxygen molecules with unpaired electrons. This chemical nature makes them highly prone to bonding with other cellular structures. As free radicals bond in this way, they disrupt the natural structure of cells, leading to cell death. The death of skin cells, in turn, is exactly the process behind skin ageing. Through their antioxidant action, polyphenols help slow down this process of skin cell death. This makes them a key defence against the signs of ageing, helping to prevent wrinkles and sagging skin, for example.

Green tea and its antibacterial properties

Thanks to its unique composition, green tea has antibacterial and antiseptic properties. This means it can help calm overactive sebaceous glands, preventing the excess sebum production responsible for acne and other unwanted blemishes.

Best for your skin? Matcha

Matcha is a powdered green tea, grown using the shading method. Rather than being brewed like a leaf tea, it's whisked together with water. This means you get the full nutritional power of green tea, rather than just an infusion made from the leaves. To prepare it, all you need to do is combine the powder with water. Thanks to this unique form, matcha delivers the complete nutritional power of green tea to the body. A single serving of matcha is up to 10 times more potent than a serving of leaf green tea – including for your skin. Matcha can also be used to make your own DIY cosmetics at home, as the powder blends easily into rich creams and lotions. See for yourself how green tea can transform your skin!
