The Hagane tea bowl is a unique vessel for matcha, distinguished by its precise, handcrafted creation on a potter’s wheel. It originates from Gifu Prefecture, specifically the Oroshi district of Toki City, where artisans have been firing distinctive Shino ware for centuries. Its brown-gray tones lend the bowl an understated elegance while reflecting its heritage. The name “Hagane,” meaning “steel” in Japanese, captures the essence of its color and character. Each hand-thrown bowl is truly one of a kind, making every tea session a special moment. Not only does the Hagane bowl look stunning on display, but it is also exceptionally comfortable to use.
The traditional way to prepare matcha comes from the Japanese Tea Ceremony. It involves using a matcha bowl, a bamboo whisk- chasen and a bamboo spoon- chashaku.
Place 2 chashaku spoons of matcha (1,5g) in a matcha bowl and pour 100ml of hot water (80 °C). Chasen in hand, vigorously whisk your matcha from the wrist in m-shaped, not circular, motion. In about 20 seconds your bowl should be filled with a perfect jade-green foam. You can add more water now if you like your matcha to be less strong.
