How to care for your matcha accessories?

28.10.2025

Caring for your matcha accessories is a simple yet important ritual. To fully enjoy the process of preparing matcha, it’s worth taking a moment to look after your tools properly. Regular cleaning and correct storage not only prolong their lifespan but also help maintain their aesthetic appeal and hygiene.

How to clean ceramic accessories?

Ceramic vessels, such as the matchawan (matcha bowl), are at the heart of the Japanese tea ritual. Each bowl is unique – differing in shape, glaze, and care requirements. Always check the product description on our website to see whether your bowl, for example, is dishwasher-safe.

For most ceramic items, we recommend:

  • Hand washing with warm water and a mild washing-up liquid using a soft sponge
  • Avoiding the dishwasher – high temperatures and strong detergents can dull the glaze or damage delicate details
  • Rinsing and drying thoroughly – rinse well and allow to air-dry in a well-ventilated place
  • Never leaving matcha residue – dried matcha can leave stubborn stains on the inside of the bowl.

Remember, each bowl is a unique, often handmade piece. With proper care, it can serve you beautifully for many years.

How to care for bamboo accessories?

Traditional bamboo tools, such as the chasen (whisk) and chashaku (scoop), require gentle maintenance.

  • Do not wash them in the dishwasher or leave them soaking in water – bamboo can easily warp or crack
  • After each use, rinse with warm water (without detergent) and allow to dry naturally
  • Before using your chasen, soak it in warm water for a few minutes – this softens the bamboo tines, making them more flexible and less prone to breaking
  • Never store a damp whisk in a closed container – limited airflow can lead to mould growth
  • If your chasen becomes heavily soiled, soak it in warm water for a few minutes to dissolve any remaining matcha
  • Once dry, store it on a naoshi (whisk holder), available on our website, which helps preserve its natural shape

Bamboo is an organic material, so over time it may darken or change colour slightly. This is a natural process that doesn’t affect its functionality.

How to store matcha accessories?

To keep your accessories in perfect condition for as long as possible, store them correctly.

Keep them in a dry place, away from moisture and direct sunlight. Humidity can cause bamboo to warp, while UV light can weaken its structure and fade its colour. Avoid placing them in closed or damp cupboards, especially right after washing – this is one of the most common mistakes that shortens their lifespan.

Bamboo tools such as the chasen and chashaku are best kept on an open shelf or dedicated stand, allowing for proper air circulation and natural drying. This helps maintain their shape and prevents mould.

If you prepare matcha regularly, consider creating a small matcha corner – a space where all your tools are neatly organised, well-ventilated, and beautifully displayed.

Remember! Always read the product descriptions on our website, follow the manufacturer’s care instructions, and treat your accessories with the same care and mindfulness you bring to preparing your matcha.
