The matcha bowl is an essential element of the Japanese tea ceremony and a beautiful piece that will enhance any kitchen. The Nepu bowl, with colors reminiscent of a dense forest, is a favorite among lovers of fine ceramics. Deep green tones gently fade into lighter shades, culminating in a soft, pale rim. Shaped in a mold and then hand-finished, the bowl has gained its subtly irregular, organic form.
The bowl was crafted in Toki on Japan’s Honshu Island, in the Oroshi district, renowned for firing traditional Shino ceramics, celebrated for their distinctive glazing and craftsmanship. Its wide base makes whisking matcha with water or milk effortless—leaving you to simply enjoy the taste and soothing effect of matcha tea.
The traditional way to prepare matcha comes from the Japanese Tea Ceremony. It involves using a matcha bowl, a bamboo whisk- chasen and a bamboo spoon- chashaku.
Place 2 chashaku spoons of matcha (1,5g) in a matcha bowl and pour 100ml of hot water (80 °C). Chasen in hand, vigorously whisk your matcha from the wrist in m-shaped, not circular, motion. In about 20 seconds your bowl should be filled with a perfect jade-green foam. You can add more water now if you like your matcha to be less strong.
