The Yama matchawan is a handcrafted matcha bowl made from premium porcelain. Its name means “mountain,” evoking the calm, organic shapes inspired by natural landscapes. The minimalist form and refined finish make it a perfect companion for the daily ritual of preparing and drinking matcha.
Every piece is one of a kind – each bowl is made by hand in a small ceramic studio, so subtle variations in detail are part of its character. The wide base and low, open walls make it easy to whisk matcha into a smooth, creamy foam using a bamboo chasen or a milk frother.
The Yama matchawan is designed and crafted by Quiet Form, a ceramic studio based in Kyiv, founded in 2016 by artists Tania and Alex. Their work brings together a love of natural forms, quality craftsmanship, and timeless design. Each bowl is made from porcelain sourced in eastern Ukraine and fired in Japanese kilns at high temperatures – ensuring both durability and a distinctive character all its own.
The traditional way to prepare matcha comes from the Japanese Tea Ceremony. It involves using a matcha bowl, a bamboo whisk- chasen and a bamboo spoon- chashaku.
Place 2 chashaku spoons of matcha (1,5g) in a matcha bowl and pour 100ml of hot water (80 °C). Chasen in hand, vigorously whisk your matcha from the wrist in m-shaped, not circular, motion. In about 20 seconds your bowl should be filled with a perfect jade-green foam. You can add more water now if you like your matcha to be less strong.
