Matchawan Shizen – its Japanese name meaning “nature” – is a true masterpiece of ceramics born in the picturesque city of Toki. Artists from Toki in Gifu Prefecture draw on techniques with over 1,300 years of history. Each bowl is meticulously thrown on the potter’s wheel, giving every piece its own unique soul. The Shizen matcha bowl evokes the calm of a forest. Its irregular form and delicate details make drinking tea not only a pleasant ritual but also a beautiful immersion in Japanese aesthetics. Shizen strikes the ideal balance between beauty and functionality. The matcha bowl is dishwasher-safe on a gentle cycle, making it a practical addition to any kitchen.
The traditional way to prepare matcha comes from the Japanese Tea Ceremony. It involves using a matcha bowl, a bamboo whisk- chasen and a bamboo spoon- chashaku.
Place 2 chashaku spoons of matcha (1,5g) in a matcha bowl and pour 100ml of hot water (80 °C). Chasen in hand, vigorously whisk your matcha from the wrist in m-shaped, not circular, motion. In about 20 seconds your bowl should be filled with a perfect jade-green foam. You can add more water now if you like your matcha to be less strong.
