The Kinbo matcha bowl is a unique vessel with irregular edges and a mesmerizing interplay of colors. Cool blue hues emerge from the warm brown surface, evoking mist or ethereal dust. Crafted on Japan’s Honshu Island, in the city of Toki, it hails from the Oroshi district—renowned for producing Japan’s celebrated ceramics, including Shino ware, distinguished by its signature glazing and traditional techniques.
The matcha bowl is first shaped in a mold and then carefully hand-finished, giving each piece a one-of-a-kind form. Its walls taper slightly toward the top, allowing the bowl to sit comfortably in your hands. The wide base makes it easy to whisk matcha with water using a chasen—the traditional bamboo whisk for preparing matcha.
The traditional way to prepare matcha comes from the Japanese Tea Ceremony. It involves using a matcha bowl, a bamboo whisk- chasen and a bamboo spoon- chashaku.
Place 2 chashaku spoons of matcha (1,5g) in a matcha bowl and pour 100ml of hot water (80 °C). Chasen in hand, vigorously whisk your matcha from the wrist in m-shaped, not circular, motion. In about 20 seconds your bowl should be filled with a perfect jade-green foam. You can add more water now if you like your matcha to be less strong.
