Matchawan Sumomo with a spout

The Sumomo Matchawan is the latest in our collection of matcha bowls, one of the key elements of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Its distinctive shape, with low walls and wide bottom, allows for easy whisking and creating a perfect froth known as the “jasper mousse.” The spout prevents you from spilling your matcha when you pour it into a glass. The name czarki comes from the Japanese plum. One Japanese legend has it that sumomo plums, made as a gift to the gods, helped a famous warrior, Minamoto Noriyoshi, win a battle. The Japanese believe that eating Sumomo plums helps ward off evil spirits and disease.

Matcha preparation in a bowl

The traditional way to prepare matcha comes from the Japanese Tea Ceremony. It involves using a matcha bowl, a bamboo whisk- chasen and a bamboo spoon- chashaku.

Place 2 chashaku spoons of matcha (1,5g) in a matcha bowl and pour 100ml of hot water (80 °C). Chasen in hand, vigorously whisk your matcha from the wrist in m-shaped, not circular, motion. In about 20 seconds your bowl should be filled with a perfect jade-green foam. You can add more water now if you like your matcha to be less strong.
